About Todd, the founder and owner of Foods of NY Tours:
My first journey to New York City was in the Summer of 1977. I was 15 years old and had $5.00 in my pocket; enough for a round trip bus ticket, a slice of thin crust pizza, and a fresh-filled cannoli. That day ended outside a tiny cafe listening to an elderly man playing a sitar. This food and cultural experience was the beginning of Foods of New York Tours, even though I didn’t realize it at the time.
As we start to explore Greenwich Village
My 3 friends and I walked up and down MacDougal Street searching for the most unique food we could find. We kept walking by Yatagan Kebab House for about 20 minutes. This eatery looked like it was right out of a Middle Eastern movie. There was a giant piece of meat situated on an upright spit in the front window. There was a guy in the window cutting slices of meat and stuffing it into bread. We had never eaten anything like this!
Since we didn’t know what it was, we had to try it eventually. When the shop became less busy, the owner stopped us as we were walking by and asked us if we wanted to try a sample of the meat. We kind of had no choice at that point, so we did. Wow, that first taste was amazing! We then bought 4 sandwiches and sat with the owner as we ate, and he explained where he was from, what the meat was, and how it was prepared. That was also the first time I had pita bread.
We had a fascinating hour sitting with Nedret (the owner who was from Turkey and who I am still friends with today). That food experience started my exploration into ethnic cuisine. From that point on, the fun started!
And in April of 1998, I gave my first food tour of Greenwich Village.
