New tasting alert!
Paletas from La Newyorkina are now being featured on our Heart & Soul of Greenwich Village Tour.
Though the Spaniards introduced ice cream to North America during the European colonization, paletas are linked to Mexican heritage, and are often made without milk, using unique Mexican ingredients. ‘Paleta’ translates to little stick.
The word paletero is known as “ice-cream man” in English translation. Paletas are not only a dessert but reflect the paleteros’ own cultural identity, representing a cultural tradition of frozen treats in Mexico.
The pushcart or carrito paletero is more than just a way of delivering paletas to buyers but also represent economic means for new immigrants.
